of October. It would take some risky winemaking decisions to hold off on picking the fruit in a panic before the heavy rains were to come. Those that waited were rewarded with some beautiful wines. In Calistoga, shortly after the rains, warm, dry winds blew through the valley for 3 days straight, drying up canopies and soil moisture. Holding off picking until the end of October we were able to achieve a long hang time while meeting our standard ripening levels.
